Karachi, Oct 11: City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil on Wednesday appealed to the imams of mosque to create awareness in the masses about the importance of trees for human beings and environment.

She said this while addressing a meeting to review the progress of Mission Greener Karachi held here at her office. She said that creating awareness in the people about the mission was necessary for the its success.

She also directed officials concerned to utilize all resources and experience for the success of the mission. She said that for the protection of trees a resolution would soon be presented in the City Council.

Nasreen Jalil directed the EDO Master Plan to point out the areas where trees in large number could immediately be planted.

She also requested Director of the International Union for Conservation for Nature Muhammad Tahir to present his recommendation for the plantation of mangroves in the coastal areas of Karachi.

She said that encroachments in different parks of city were being removed so that more trees could be planted there. She also directed the chairman of the Agriculture Committee to present a resolution in the City Council about solving the problems faced in connection with the Mission Greener Karachi.

The meeting was told that plantation of Neem, legnum, con crops and cassia was suitable for Karachi while plantation of mangroves in coastal areas of Karachi would be beneficial.

The meeting was told that the objectives of the Mission Greener Karachi were plantation of a tree per person, and ensuring five-meter open space per person in Karachi. It was decided that special tree plantation drives would be conducted in schools, colleges and universities.—PPI
