India keen to regain ODI form

Published August 13, 2006

COLOMBO, Aug 12: India will be keen to shrug off their poor form that led to a 1-4 rout in West Indies as they clash with Sri Lanka and South Africa in the tri-series starting here on Monday.

Not just India, ranked fourth with 113 rating points on International Cricket Council (ICC) One-day Championship, but South Africa (ranked second, 123 points) and Sri Lanka (sixth, 107 points) will also strive to do better in the series.

India will be out to prove that their series loss to West Indies in the Caribbean in May was just a temporary blip on their chart of excellent results in this form of the game over past 12 months.

Sri Lanka will want to maintain recent momentum, with a 100 percent record in their last seven one-day matches, against England and the Netherlands.

If Mahela Jayawardene's side can do that, they will prove themselves to be a serious contender for both Champions Trophy in India in October- November and next year's World Cup in West Indies and also make further progress up ICC ODI Championship table.

South Africa will be keen to show just why they are as high as second in the table.

If they perform well here they will have every chance of reducing leaders Australia's eight-point lead.—Agencies
