ISLAMABAD: The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has permanently closed the G-10 weekly bazaar and the exclusive ladies’ bazaar as both fall within the right of way of the proposed 11th Avenue project.

“It is to inform that construction of 11th Avenue has been approved by the CDA’s Development Working Party meeting held in September. Accordingly, the temporarily established weekly (Sunday) bazaar and women’s bazaar at G-10 right of way are permanently closed with immediate effect,” read a notification issued by the MCI.

Meanwhile, officials said that the process of removing structures to clear the land had also begun. However, the MCI has not yet announced an alternative site for the bazaars.

It is relevant to note that the CDA’s Development Working Party (DWP) approved a PC-I worth Rs24.5 billion for the construction of 11th Avenue, stretching from Margalla Avenue to Karnal Sher Khan Road.

According to the PC-I, the 7.5-kilometre road, featuring three lanes on each side, will be completed within a year. Engineering wing officials said around 17 bridges and overpasses were part of the project.

However, sources said the CDA was considering executing the project in two phases. Under the first-priority phase, a 3.5-kilometre stretch would be constructed from the E-11 interchange to Srinagar Highway, including an interchange at Srinagar Highway.
