RAWALPINDI: The city police have decided to intensify surveillance through the Safe City high-tech modern network to curb vehicle theft, traffic accidents, drug peddling, and other street crimes.

The decision was taken by City Police Officer (CPO) Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera during a high-level meeting attended by the SSPs of Safe City, Operations, and Investigation, alongside divisional SPs and SDPOs at the Police Lines Headquarters on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said City Police Officer Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera chaired the meeting at the Police Lines Headquarters. SSP Safe City, SSP operations, SSP investigation, SP headquarters, divisional SPs, DSP Safe City and SDPOs participated.

The CPO, while giving instructions regarding crime prevention by taking advantage of the modern network of Safe City, said that surveillance should be further tightened through Safe City in vehicle or motorcycle theft, traffic accidents, drugs and other crimes. The CPO directed that ongoing operations against drug peddlers be intensified.

CPO Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera further said that an effective crackdown on drugs should be ensured and effective action should be taken against wanted suspects and declared criminals involved in serious cases.

Prevention of crime is the first duty, for which all steps are being taken, the CPO said at the meeting.

Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl within the limits of the Rawat police station, officials said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the victim’s father, a vendor residing in a temporary settlement in Quaid City, the incident took place late Tuesday night. The complainant stated that upon returning to his hut after midnight, he spotted a youth fleeing the scene.

The victim subsequently narrated her ordeal to her father, stating she was assaulted while he was away at a nearby tea stall. Following the complaint, the Rawat police apprehended the nominated suspect and shifted the victim to a hospital for a mandatory medical examination. Further investigation is underway.
