Gymkhana suspends member over ‘hooliganism’ at club

LAHORE: The Lahore Gymkhana Club administration has suspended the membership of a son of an “influential member” following his alleged involvement in hooliganism in the club, forming a three-member committee to probe the matter.

The club administration took action after a video surfacing on social media showed some persons indulging in hooliganism at the club.

Justifying the action, club chairman Salman Saddique told Dawn that the membership suspension is a standard operating procedure (SOP) in case of any serious breach of discipline by a Gymkhana member, whether inside or outside the club.

He said that as per standard procedure, a three-member standing discipline committee, comprising independent senior club members, is looking into the scuffle issue.

According to a source privy to the matter, the suspended member had not only misbehaved with the club staff but also thrown plates at some other members over a “guest issue.”

The club members condemned the incident and sought the matter be taken to the executive committee for action against the “culprit(s)” and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Last month, the Punjab Assembly’s Special Committee had summoned in person some senior provincial government officers in connection with the Lahore Gymkhana land lease controversy, questioning the meagre Rs5,000 annual rent being charged from the elite club established over more than 100 acres of prime state land in the Punjab capital.

The committee sought the original approval record and legal basis for the arrangement.

The committee meeting, presided over by MPA Samiullah Khan, had expressed serious concerns at the nominal rent and the renewal of the club’s lease for another 50 years in 2000, even though the earlier lease was still subsisting at that time.
