GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Governor Syed Mehdi Shah has said that the people of GB have long been struggling for their economic and political rights, and addressing their aspirations is an urgent necessity.

Addressing a session of the GB Assembly, chaired by Speaker Imran Nadeem, on Monday, the governor said the local people had demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Pakistan since its creation.

He said the region was an important part of Pakistan from geographical and defence perspectives and had immense potential in terms of natural resources, water reservoirs, minerals and tourism.

“Our history, culture, traditions and national identity are deeply rooted in our strong ties with Pakistan. We take pride in this historic relationship and will continue to play our role in the country’s development, stability and prosperity,” he said.

He said the people of GB had long been engaged in a political struggle for their constitutional and economic rights, adding that addressing their expectations was an urgent necessity.
