DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Unidentified armed men kidnapped four polio workers in the Sheikh Utar area of Tank district, police said on Tuesday.

They said that the polio workers were performing duty in Gaius village when they were kidnapped.

The kidnapped workers were identified as union council medical officer Qadeer, area supervisor Usman and vaccinators Sameer and Umair.

Police said that efforts were underway to trace the workers and secure their safe recovery.

The motive behind the kidnapping and the identity of the assailants were not immediately known.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed concern over the abduction and called for immediate and effective measures for the safe recovery of the workers.

In a statement, the governor described the incident as “extremely regrettable and condemnable”, saying polio workers were performing a national duty to protect children and promote a healthy Pakistan.

Mr Kundi said the government was responsible for providing security to polio teams and added that targeting polio workers was against humanity and the national interest.
