KARACHI: Enraged people set a trailer on fire after it ran over and killed a pregnant woman and injured her husband in a road accident in Liaquatabad, police said on Saturday.

A traffic police officer said that the couple was travelling on a motorbike when the trailer hit them as they descended from the Liaquatabad flyover and approached the Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad on S M Taufiq Road.

Both sustained critical injuries and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where Faiza, 45, was pronounced dead. Her husband, Fahim, 55, was admitted for treatment.

Officials said the deceased woman, who was said to be full-term pregnant, was returning after a medical check-up.

The driver fled the scene and abandoned the heavy vehicle, which was subsequently set on fire by an angry mob.

The police said reckless driving was believed to be the probable cause of the accident.

In a separate incident, a young motorcyclist was killed on the Superhighway, police and rescue services officials said.

They said the man, later identified as Asif, was riding his motorbike when a trailer hit him near Jamali Bridge.

He was taken to the ASH, where he was pronounced dead.

SITE-Superhighway Industrial Area SHO Mohammad Nawaz said the driver fled the scene, while police had seized the heavy vehicle.

A Rescue-1122 spokesperson said that the mob did not allow firemen and law enforcers to extinguish the blaze.
