CHARSADDA: A trailer carrying a shipping container got stuck under a flyover pier being built on Mardan Road here, raising concerns over the project’s design, vertical clearance and construction supervision.

The incident disrupted traffic and caused inconvenience to motorists and commuters, drawing attention to the need for proper assessment of road levels and structural height during the planning and construction of flyovers.

The trailer became wedged beneath the unfinished structure, prompting questions about whether sufficient clearance had been provided for heavy vehicles, particularly container trucks used for commercial transportation.

Motorists have urged the relevant authorities and project engineers to inspect the site and determine why the vehicle could not pass beneath the structure. They stressed that adequate vertical clearance must be ensured to allow the safe movement of heavy vehicles on busy roads.

Concerns raised over project’s design

They also called for a technical investigation to establish whether the incident resulted from a design flaw, differences in road and bridge levels, or the movement of an oversized vehicle.

Residents and commuters have urged the authorities to introduce immediate safety measures at the construction site, including prominent height-restriction signs, advance warning boards and effective traffic-management arrangements to prevent similar incidents.

They said that if the available clearance was found to be inadequate, the relevant department and contractors should take corrective measures in consultation with qualified engineers before the project progressed further.

The incident has also highlighted the importance of coordination among the executing agency, consultants and contractors to ensure that construction activities do not create avoidable hazards for road users.

The relevant authorities have been urged to investigate the incident, verify the approved design and take appropriate corrective measures to ensure the safe passage of vehicles and uninterrupted traffic flow on Mardan Road.
