You bought your school bag with so much love. You carry it every day and put your books and copies in it, so it’s something you’re close to every single day. But if I ask you to draw it without looking, could you remember every detail? Or would you get stuck in the middle, staring at the paper, and trying to sneak your bag? I never tried it with my bag, but I tried something close, on a website called Logos From Memory that I found by accident.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was supposed to do, but soon I realised it was a memory game where we had to draw famous logos from memory. For example, you’ve seen the Apple logo hundreds of times, so drawing it should be easy. Try it. The funny part is when you get the leaf or the bite wrong. That’s when you realise that just because we see something every day, it doesn’t mean we remember all the little details.
Logos From Memory tests how well you remember the logos of famous brands. Here is how it works. The game gives you a brand name and a blank drawing space. There are no hints. All you have to do is draw the logo from your head, using your mouse or your finger on a phone, and you can pick from a few colours. When you finish, you press “reveal,” and the real logo appears. Then you look at your drawing next to the real one and try not to laugh. Maybe the bite is on the wrong side of the Apple logo, but it’s okay; you can keep trying.
The game is not only for laughs, though. It shows you something about your own brain. You can recognise a logo in half a second, but that is different from remembering its details. Most of us are great at recognising things, but not at recalling things. Think of the signboards you pass on any street. You know them all, but could you draw one properly?
So if you think you know your favourite brands, take a test. You might be surprised how little you noticed.
