RAWALPINDI: Police detained a man and his parents on Tuesday following a complaint by his wife, who alleged that she had been tortured in the Chaklala area.

The woman, a resident of Shah Khalid Colony, registered an FIR with Chaklala police, stating that she had been married for five years. She alleged that after her marriage, her husband and in-laws would beat her to force her to do domestic work.

She said she had endured the treatment for the sake of her married life. However, at around 4pm on Sunday, when she was at home and her husband had gone to work, her mother-in-law, father-in-law and brother-in-law allegedly started beating her and even cut her hair.

She further said when her husband returned home and she told him what had happened, he did not believe her. Instead, she alleged, he also beat her and locked her inside the house.

According to the FIR, she somehow managed to reach a neighbour’s house and inform her parents. Later, she and her sister approached the police and lodged a complaint against her in-laws and brother-in-law. Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation.

A police spokesperson said senior officers had taken notice of a social media post about violence against a woman in Chaklala area, and police traced the woman and her family.

He said the matter had not previously been reported to the police. The woman’s husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law had been taken into custody, he added.

The detainees are being investigated from all angles. Police said violence, oppression and exploitation of women would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
