Defective pumps add to insanitation

LARKANA, Feb 10: Out of 12 big pumps installed at pumping station-1 to drain out sewage, 10 were found inoperative when Larkana District Nazim Khursheed Junejo and the taluka Nazim Nazeer Ahmed Shaikh visited the pumping station with Public Health officials the other day.

Only two functional pumps could not pump out drain water and that had resulted in overflowing of gutters and insanitation, the officials briefed them.

“We have sanctioned Rs1.5 million for quick repair of defective pumps”, said the taluka Nazim hoping that in a fortnight things would show improvement.

The Nazims also visited ongoing development works in the city and expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of work.

Later discussing the over all city situation in Larkana Municipal Corporation (LMC), the district Nazim said that Larkana’s monthly revenue was only Rs25 million while its monthly expenses were estimated at Rs220 million.

He feared that it would become very difficult for the district government to meet its expenses in future.

He said that after June 2002 the government would stop giving funds to district governments so they should find new income generating sources to address the situation.

The LMC’s existing building would only be demolished after over 75 per cent booking of shops and offices in the building to be constructed, said the taluka Nazim dispelling the impression that the municipal offices were being shifted right now.

He alleged that in past valuable properties of the LMC had been dished out at throwaway prices and that had led to financial crisis.
