QUETTA: Treasury and opposition members in the Balochistan Assembly on Monday demanded the immediate recovery of a 14-year-old Hindu girl, and action against the man accused of abducting her from Sibi.

Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, who presided over the session, sought a report from the Sindh government on the alleged abduction, forced marriage and religious conversion of the girl.

Dr Ashok Kumar, a PML-N minority member, raised the issue, saying the girl had reportedly been taken from Sibi a few days ago and shifted to Sindh, where she was allegedly forcibly converted and married.

He urged the provincial government to contact its Sindh counterpart immediately and ensure the girl’s safe recovery.

Parliamentary Secretary for Religious Affairs Sanjay Kumar of the PPP told the house that a man had allegedly abducted the ninth-grade student and taken her to Sindh.

He said the girl’s mother was in an extremely poor condition and had reportedly remained unconscious for the past four days. The family was appealing for the girl’s immediate return, he added.

Sanjay Kumar urged lawmakers to raise their voices for the girl, alleging that her religion had been forcibly changed. He also said questions had been raised about the legal validity of the marriage registration document.

He called for an immediate investigation, the girl’s safe recovery and justice for her family.

Former chief minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch condemned the reported incident, stressing that all minority communities in Balochistan were entitled to equal rights.

Home Minister Ziaullah Langove assured the house that the government had taken notice of the matter and would contact the Sindh government. He said a report would be presented to the assembly after consultations with the relevant authorities.

Recruitments

Members also raised concerns over alleged irregularities and corruption in recruitment to government departments, calling for an investigation. They exchanged accusations over merit-based hiring and accountability in provincial departments.

Opposition Leader Younus Aziz Zehri criticised treasury members for repeatedly airing their grievances during assembly sessions. He said the debate had continued for nearly an hour, leaving opposition members and other representatives with little opportunity to speak.

Mr Zehri urged treasury members to take up their concerns with the chief minister, cabinet and relevant ministers.
