MOHMAND: The Mohmand Political Alliance (MPA) has rejected the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as undemocratic and contrary to the public mandate.

At a meeting held at the Mohmand Press Club here on Monday, chaired by the alliance’s president Maulana Arif Haqqani and general secretary Jangrez Khan, leaders and workers from various political parties discussed the imposition of emergency, governor’s rule, democratic governance, provincial autonomy, natural resources and alleged mistreatment of political workers.

The participants included Maulana Arif Haqqani and Arshad Bakhtiar of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, Maulana Imtiaz Naumani of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami), Hafiz Rahim Shah Mohmand of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Saeed Khan and Firdous Khan of Jamaat-i-Islami, Majeed Khan of Awami National Party, Akhtar Shah of Pakistan Peoples Party, and representatives of Qaumi Watan Party and other political groups.

Through a unanimous resolution, the meeting rejected the emergency and governor’s rule and called for the public to be informed of the reasons for such measures and the constitutional and legal provisions governing them.

The participants stressed that public mandate, elected representatives and democratic principles must be respected. They said political disputes should be resolved through dialogue and constitutional means rather than measures that could undermine democratic institutions.

The meeting also expressed concern over the bid to reactivate peace committees, emphasising that all measures relating to law and order should be taken within a clearly defined legal framework, with accountability and public confidence ensured.

The alliance rejected proposals to divide Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and called for protection of the province’s unity, identity and territorial integrity. It maintained that any decision on such sensitive matters must be based on public opinion, constitutional principles and democratic consultation.

The participants also called for protection of constitutional and legal rights of local communities over the province’s natural resources, demanding their transparent distribution and safeguarding the interests of the local population.

Expressing concern over the alleged picking up of political workers from their homes and reported human rights violations, the meeting called for strict adherence to the Constitution and the law. It stressed that all actions must respect the sanctity of homes, human dignity and fundamental rights.

The Mohmand Political Alliance resolved to continue its efforts to protect democracy, constitutional supremacy, the public mandate, provincial autonomy and political freedoms. It said the people’s rights and the province’s collective interests would not be compromised.

If this new technocratic setup proves to be successful and efficient, it might just end up increasing centralisation of decision-making.
