GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan police have arrested 58 people for allegedly impersonating shortlisted candidates during recruitment interviews for the posts of corporals and constables.

The suspects were taken to a police station, and cases were registered against them under Section 419 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Interviews of more than 2,000 male and female candidates shortlisted for the recruitment process are currently underway at the Central Police Office in Gilgit. The recruitment drive aims to fill more than 800 vacant posts of corporals and constables in the police department.

According to a spokesperson for GB police, action is being taken against those involved in violations of the law and fraudulent activities to ensure transparency and uphold merit in the recruitment process.

“Action against those involved in violations of the law and fraud is continuing without discrimination to ensure transparent recruitment and uphold merit,” the spokesperson said. He added that these measures aim to protect the rights of eligible candidates and maintain public confidence in the recruitment process.

An official of GB police told Dawn that interviews for the posts of corporals and constables were being conducted in accordance with merit and eligibility criteria. Candidates who had passed the written examination were invited to appear for interviews.

The official said 58 people had been arrested for allegedly appearing in interviews on behalf of the actual candidates. Cases were registered against the suspects on charges of impersonation, and they were disqualified from the recruitment process.

GB police had advertised more than 800 vacancies for the posts of corporals and constables. More than 2,000 male and female candidates from across the region were shortlisted for interviews.

The official said the list of selected candidates would be issued within a few days after the completion of the interview process.
