ISLAMABAD: A day after the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PPP on Monday stressed the need to adhere to the Constitution in the current situation.

PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari emphasised the importance of constitutional compliance, saying, “Legal requirements and the parliamentary process must remain fundamental to any extraordinary measure.”

Reacting to the imposition of emergency in KP, he said the matter would be brought before parliament, where elected representatives would deliberate on it and take a decision in accordance with constitutional procedures.

Mr Bukhari said the PPP believed in democracy, constitutional supremacy and the sovereignty of parliament.

Nayyar Bukhari says parliament will determine appropriate course of action

“The invocation of constitutional provisions may become necessary under extraordinary circumstances; however, any such measure must be based on constitutional requirements rather than political considerations and must remain within the limits prescribed by the Constitution,” he added.

The PPP leader said questions had been raised about the KP government’s performance in maintaining law and order and its alleged lack of cooperation in combating terrorism.

He said terrorist attacks on security institutions, police stations and places of worship had created serious difficulties for the public, while fear and insecurity had forced residents in several areas to remain confined to their homes.

Mr Bukhari stressed that effective measures to prevent cross-border infiltration and attacks from Afghanistan were essential to safeguarding Pakistan’s national security.

He said responsible cooperation between the federal and provincial governments was necessary to eliminate terrorism and protect the lives and property of citizens.

The PPP leader said party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and President Asif Ali Zardari had made concerted efforts to resolve the issue.

However, attempts to find a solution through negotiations had not proved successful.

Mr Bukhari said parliament would have the opportunity to examine the imposition of emergency in KP and determine an appropriate course of action.
