LARKANA: Lifting of sand from the banks of Rice Canal and its allied channels has been banned for 90 days to avoid damage to the irrigation infrastructure and any major accident.

According to a notification issued by the Larkana Commissioner, Dr Rasheed Masood Khan, the ban has come into effect from Monday (Oct 12).

It said that the ban was recommended by the Larkana deputy commissioner, and imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.PC).

SHOs of respective jurisdictions would have the authority to take action against violators of the ban, it added.

Through a separate notification, the commissioner has imposed a complete ban on the bathing and movement of buffaloes within the BS Feeder (canal) area.

It said that the ban has been imposed for 90 days on the recommendation of the Kandhkot-Kashmore deputy commissioner.

The DC had written to the commissioner that movement of buffaloes in the feeder area had been causing serious damage to the canal’s embankments which could pose a threat to the canal during floods or Kharif season when water levels used to rise.

The notification issued on Monday warned that action could be taken against buffalo owners and herders by the SHO concerned if the ban was violated.
