BAJAUR: A policeman was martyred when unidentified assailants opened fire on him in Barang tehsil here on Monday, officials and residents said.
DSP Saidur Rahman told reporters that the incident occurred in the hilly Asil Targao area. “A police team headed by Barang police station SHO Bakht Zaman was on a routine patrol when unidentified assailants targeted constable Irshad Khan, killing him on the spot,” he said.
The DSP said the assailants managed to flee after the incident.
Mansoor Khan, spokesperson for the district police, said that an investigation was underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those involved.
He said that the body of the slain cop was dispatched to his native village for burial after completing necessary formalities at the hospital.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killing.
