NEW EAST INDIA COMPANY

NEW EAST INDIA COMPANY: The British Colonial Raj prevailed in India during which all critical decisions regarding distribution of resources were made in London. The frequent visits of the ruling elite of Pakistan to London suggest there is now in place a New East India Company under which the fate of the people of Pakistan is decided by a powerful few. After Partition, India had approved its constitution, and started a process to eliminate absentee land-holdings, with the land getting re-allotted to those who tilled the land. This improved agricultural yield and ensured that those who colla-

borated with the colonisers no longer monopolised political power. Pakistan did not follow that path in its true essence.

GLORIFYING INDIA: This refers to the report ‘Milestone man Kohli powers India to big win over WI’ (Sept 28). While Kohli is an exceptional cricketer and international matches deserve to be covered, I was surprised by the rather enthusiastic tone and display of the coverage. Politics has already been allowed by India to determine the sporting relationship. Under these circumstances, Pakistani media should exercise editorial perspective. Reporting Indian cricket is journalism; giving ‘celebratory treatment’ to the Indian team is an editorial choice.

DISRESPECTING THE QUAID: As a mark of respect, portraits of the Quaid-i-Azam are displayed across official premises and settings. Sadly, it has been observed that portraits of political leaders have also been hung alongside that of the Quaid. This is like disrespecting the founding father. It is equally painful that the national media has turned a blind eye to this practice. This issue has not been highlighted, particularly by journalists who visit these government premises, like, say, the Presidency, to cover official functions and events. The occupants of these official residences may display portraits of their political leaders, but not in a manner disrespecting the Quaid.
