PTI MPA demands Rs5,000 per maund wheat support price

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Punjab Kissan Wing Secretary General Ejaz Shafi has submitted an adjournment motion to the Punjab Assembly secretariat on Thursday, calling for immediate announcement of the wheat support price at Rs5,000 per maund to save the agriculture sector from “impending collapse”.

In his adjournment motion, Mr Shafi has also called for a debate on the government’s “flawed” agricultural policies and the severe crisis gripping the farming sector.

The MPA pointed out that while the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on National Food Security has approved fixing the wheat support price at Rs5,000 per maund, the Punjab government has failed to take any concrete measures to implement it.

The motion highlights a plain economic mismatch, noting that while farmers were previously forced to sell their wheat between Rs3,000 and Rs3,200 per maund, the grain is now trading in markets between Rs5,000 and Rs5,500 per maund, which means the price spike has brought zero benefit to the actual growers.

Criticising the wheat import policy, he pointed out that the government has paid Rs5,000 per maund for the wheat imported from Ukraine, but refuses to pay the same price to the local farmers.
