PESHAWAR: Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) has installed aerial bundled cables (ABC) on 18 high-loss feeders in Peshawar, Charsadda and Shabqadar as part of measures to curb power theft and reduce line losses.

According to a statement issued by the company on Tuesday work on another eight feeders was under way and nearing completion.

The company said six feeders in Peshawar, Kachori, Opazai, Pir Bala, Safdarabad, Palosai-II and Naguman-II, had been equipped with ABC cables.

In Charsadda, the cables had been installed on eight feeders Utmanzai, Turangzai, Ziam, Umarzai, Dhakki, Bahlola, Sheikhabad and Umerzai-I.

Four feeders in Shabqadar, Palwan Qilla Attaki, Palwan Qilla-II, Fatimakhel and Matta Mughalkhel, had also been covered under the initiative.

Pesco said the specially insulated cables had protective, non-conductive outer coverings designed to make difficult unauthorised connections, commonly known as kunda connections.

It said the system was also expected to help reduce overloading and unnecessary tripping. The cables were less vulnerable to faults caused by rain and storms and their non-conductive covering could reduce the risk of electric shocks, improving safety for consumers and line staff, said the company.

Pesco Chief Akhtar Hamid Khan said the installation of ABC cables was an important step towards reducing power theft and line losses.

He expressed the hope that lower losses would eventually help improve power supply and reduce power outage on the affected feeders.

Mr Khan said Pesco planned to extend the installation of ABC cables to more feeders, particularly in areas where power theft and line losses remained high.
