KARACHI: Students of Karachi Grammar School (KGS) represented Pakistan at the International Olympiad on Climate Change and the Environment and earned multiple international honours.
According to a press release issued here, the event was held at Sirius University of Science and Technology, Russia last month.
The KGS student team — Sharym Danish Kalia, Muhammad Aazan Khurram, Abdullah Siddiqui Ghani and Muhammad Gardezi — competed against young scientists from around the world and secured the Gold Medal for Best Team Performance across the Olympiad’s rigorous theoretical and practical rounds.
In the individual theoretical round, Sharym Danish received an individual silver medal, while Aazan Khurram received an individual bronze medal. Abdullah Siddiqui was awarded a certificate of merit for his individual performance.
The team also received the prestigious Ozon Limited Partners Award for Best Team Project at the Olympiad’s Festival of Projects, it added.
The Olympiad challenged participants through a combination of advanced theoretical examinations, practical field and laboratory work, and interdisciplinary team case studies.
It said at the centre of the KGS team’s award-winning project was an AI-driven research model examining urban heat mitigation in Karachi and Sochi.
Using remote-sensing data, machine learning and microclimate modelling, the students investigated the impact of increasing urban tree canopy coverage and introducing reflective “cool” roofs.
Their research explored data-driven and cost-effective approaches to addressing the Urban Heat Island effect and building climate resilience in rapidly growing cities.
