LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Sunday inaugurated five road projects under the Punjab Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPP), a move expected to generate Rs22 billion in revenue for the provincial government.
The projects include the 80-kilometre Muridke-Narowal Road, 33km Shakargarh-Narowal Road, 97km Faisalabad Ring Road, 52km Faisalabad-Sahianwala Road and 56km Faisalabad-Samundri-Rajana Road.
The roads will be handed over to private operators for seven years, with modern electronic toll plazas to be installed. The private contractors will be responsible for toll collection as well as maintenance and repair of the roads.
Senior Minister and PPP Authority Vice Chairperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said the processing time for PPP projects had been reduced from two years to six months. The government plans to shift four more roads to the PPP mode, including the Bahawalpur-Yazman, Yazman-Ahmadpur East, Raiwind-Changa Manga and Gajjumata-Kasur roads.
Ms Aurangzeb said several other projects were also in the pipeline, including water and sanitation services in Chakwal and Kasur, parking facilities, tourism projects, waste-to-energy schemes, effluent treatment plants, recycling facilities and hostels at public universities and medical colleges.
