KARACHI, July 27: The Capital City Police killed 304 dacoits in 1,592 encounters from January 2002 to July 2006, in which 9,254 dacoits were arrested while 106 police personnel were also killed and 310 sustained injuries.

Of these 1,592 police encounters, only one was doubtful while rest of the 1,591 proved genuine after the inquiries. During the same period, a total of 226 cases were registered against police officials under the Police Order 2002, while 59 cases were registered against them on orders from the courts for violating rules and regulations, misconduct and negligence.

This was stated by the DIG administration of the Capital City Police Karachi, Zafar Farooqui, while speaking at a seminar here on Thursday.

The seminar on “Police Encounters: allegations and reality” was organised by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), at its Vicky Zeitlin Media Library.

Mr Farooqui, however, rejected the perception that most of the encounters were fake.

“Like in the recent encounter in which police claimed killing of notorious kidnapper and dacoit Mashooq Brohi, the IGP Sindh ordered an inquiry in to the matter and on its findings, a criminal case was registered against some officials involved in it” he informed.

According to him, some 15 accused were killed in the custody of police since January 2002, three of them in the custody of the investigation branch and 12 in the custody of operations branch of the police department.—PPI
