LARKANA: The Pakistan Railways on Sunday restored the Mohenjo Daro Express — a train service closed nearly six months ago for “not generating sufficient revenues”.

It was restored after a series of rallies in different parts of the province by people who had regularly been travelling by the train. The rallies had become a sustained campaign over the train’s closure period.

On Sunday, the Mohenjo Daro Express resumed its journey from the Rohri station with six bogies carrying several hundred passengers. It reached the Larkana station in the afternoon.

On its arrival, the passengers were greeted by a large number of people. Prominent among them were Mashhoor Memon, Anwar Domki, Advocate Salma Bhutto, Nusrat Sarhiyo and Jamil Gaad who had spearheaded the campaign for the restoration of the train service. Local leaders of various political and social welfare organisations had also gathered at the station.

To express their happiness over the restoration of the train service, they showered rose petals on the driver and crew of the train and disembarking passengers. Station Master Ayaz Abbasi and the railway staff posted at the station also participated in the celebration. Sindh’s traditional music was played and people danced to mark the joyful occasion.

Speaking to the people, leaders of the campaign said that the Mohenjo Daro Express had been closed some six months back which had deprived a huge number of commuters of this train travel facility. They said that thousands of people used to travel by this train service daily between Rohri and Kotri at an affordable fare. They said that the business community was especially grateful to the Pakistan Railways for the restoration of the Mohenjo Daro Express.

They also thanked the federal government, particularly the railways minister, for sympathetically considering their demand and taking a favourable decision.

They urged the public at large to prefer Mohenjo Daro Express over other transport services in order to ensure that it generated sufficient revenues and continued to serve them.

The speakers also appealed to the railways minister to complete the upgradation of the Larkana-Karachi tracks so that other train services, like the Bolan Mail and Khush’hal Khan Khattak Express, were also run on this sector.
