SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Two children were injured when an old landmine exploded in the Azam Warsak area of Birmal tehsil on Saturday, police said.

Birmal circle DSP Nadir Khan Wazir told Dawn that the injured children were identified as Imran and Khan Syed. They were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana.

Mr Wazir said police registered an initial report and launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by unexploded ordnance and landmines in Lower and Upper South Waziristan districts.

Residents said incidents involving old landmines and other explosive remnants had been reported in different areas of the two districts over the past several years, with children often among those affected.

They said remnants of explosive devices reportedly left behind following past military operations continued to pose a threat to local communities in some areas.

According to residents, children were particularly vulnerable as they might not recognise or understand the danger posed by abandoned explosive devices while playing or moving through open areas.

The residents called upon the security authorities and relevant departments to undertake comprehensive surveys in affected areas and identify and clear remaining landmines and other explosive remnants.

They said systematic mine-clearance operations and greater public awareness could help prevent further casualties, particularly among children.
