BAHAWALPUR: Two schoolchildren were killed when their rickshaw was rear-ended by a speeding trailer near Adda Thingi in Vehari district on Tuesday.

According to a Rescue 1122 spokesperson, a rickshaw was taking Abdullah (12) and Inaya Waqas (10) home after school when a trailer coming from behind crushed the children under its wheel. He said that both children died on the spot.

The spokesperson further said that the trailer driver fled from the scene and the Thingi police had registered a case against him.

The rescuers handed over the bodies to their parents.

Meanwhile, Bahawalpur Rescue 1122 said that they had retrieved the body of another minor boy identified as Ali Gohar (13) on Tuesday from the River Sutlej after three days of searching near mauza Kukri.

Earlier on Monday, the body of another child Rayan (9) was retrieved after thirty hours of searching in the river. Both children drowned in the Sutlej near Bahawalpur on Sunday while bathing in the river.

The rescuers handed over the body of Rayan to his parents, who took it to Chak No. 51 in Yazman tehsil for burial.

FIRE HYDRANTS: Two public sector hospitals in Bahawalpur have been fully-equipped to meet any fire emergency, Dawn has learnt.

As per the instructions of the Punjab government, seven hydrants have been installed at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) while the Government Nawab Sadiq Hospital on Jhangiwali Road had installed hydrants and fire extinguishers in its building earlier.

Talking to Dawn, BVH MS Dr Abdul Rehman Chandio said that the newly-installed hydrants would cover almost all wards, particularly paeds, emergency and OPD buildings. He said that the availability of ample quantity of water for the hydrants had also been ensured in case of any emergency.

Nawab Sadiq Hospital MS Dr Hamid Khan told Dawn that the 411-bed hospital had already been equipped with ten hydrants and 50 fire extinguishers with adequate water supply at the time of its construction in 2011.

He said that a successful demonstration of the equipment had been given to Bahawalpur Divisional Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathia and Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza during their inspection a day earlier.
