Tribal elder’s son injured in Bajaur attack

BAJAUR: Unidentified assailants shot at and injured the son of a local elder in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur district, police and residents said on Sunday.

They told Dawn that the incident occurred in the Mata Sha area on Saturday night when unknown assailants opened fire on Mohammad Rahman, son of Malik Ghulam Rasool Khan.

They added that the 28-year-old was attacked near his home, and was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar.

Later, the injured was shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar due to his critical condition.

An official at Salarzai police station told this correspondent that they had launched an investigation to ascertain the cause and identify of those behind the shooting.

No one claimed responsibility for the incident.

Meanwhile, a man died and another sustained injuries when a loaded truck overturned on Sunday.

Rescue 1122 officials said the truck was involved in an accident in Zoor Bandar area along the Bajaur-Peshawar highway.

They said two men on board the vehicle were critically injured and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital. Later, one of them, identified as Mab Ali, 60, was pronounced dead by doctors.

The body was later dispatched to his native district for burial after completion of necessary formalities.

Also, a garments shop was reduced to ashes after a fire erupted in a market in Jar area here on Sunday.

Rescue 1122 officials and residents said the fire was reportedly caused by an electricity short circuit.

In a statement, Rescue 1122 Khar station said a team put out the fire.

CRICKET TOURNAMENT: The Bajaur Premier League Cricket Tournament began here on Sunday during a crowded opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony of the tournament’s session four was held at Bajaur Sports Complex.

Hundreds of cricket fans, elders, youth, and social and political activists were in attendance.

Deputy Commissioner Adnan Farid and District Police Officer Khan Zeb Mohmand opened the tournament.

Bajaur Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Haji Lali Shah, who has been organising the festival for the last four years, while addressing the ceremony, said that the tournament was meant to promote peace in the district.

The ceremony was informed that 20 teams from across the district were participating in the tournament, which will continue till Sept 6.
