LAHORE: The Punjab government on Friday posted 35 PAS and PMS officers against newly created additional assistant commissioners (AACs) posts in tehsils across the province to ease mounting governance pressure on district administration amid, what it called, an unprecedented expansion in governance and public service demands.
The 35 officers, namely 22 PMS and 13 PAS officers, have been posted as AACs. The move aims to share the workload of ACs and improve service delivery at the tehsil level. In total, 101 AACs posts have been created.
In a letter sent to all divisional commissioners, DCs and ACs titled “Posting of AACs (BPS-17) in Punjab” on Friday, Additional Chief Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo said the scope and complexity of district administration had widened sharply due to regulatory, municipal, revenue and development functions, making institutional strengthening essential for effective regulatory oversight and enhanced public responsiveness.
In pursuance of restructuring of district administration for efficient service delivery, Mr Sahoo stated, the government had accordingly created 101 new posts of AACs (BPS-17) at the tehsil levels.
“These officers shall function as independent field officers alongside the ACs and shall contribute towards strengthening the capacity of the district administration by ensuring more supervision, coordination and implementation of government initiatives at the grassroots level.”
Mr Sahoo stated that the new additional assistant commissioners shall report to their respective deputy commissioners (DCs) through assistant commissioners (ACs).
The AACs shall assist the assistant commissioners across all domains of tehsil administration, including matters relating to Suthra Punjab, Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), Saaf Pani, Excise and Taxation, Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA), Finance and Planning, monitoring of development schemes, coordination with the health and education departments, regulatory functions and municipal management.
In the discharge of these responsibilities, the ACS stated the newly posted AACs would not only contribute to the good governance and improved public service delivery but also receive practical field exposure and structured mentoring, enabling them to be trained for subsequent senior field assignments, including those of AC, ADC and DC.
Mr Sahoo stressed that the newly posted AACs must be provided the requisite administrative and logistical support, including suitable office accommodation and staff assistance and all other essential arrangements.
