LAHORE: Heavy rains continued to hit northern areas of the country on the second day today [Aug 1] as a result of which tremendous loss of life and property has been reported. Sialkot reported the maximum downpour where one hundred mm of rain has so far been recorded. … In the provincial metropolis, which received about ten inches of rain yesterday, another 13 mm downpour was recorded today. About 2,000 “katcha” and old houses reportedly collapsed in the provincial capital... . ... The sewerage system in the city failed to function properly and rain water continued to flow over the roads in different areas causing great inconvenience. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by the staff reporter,] the Federal Information Minister, Mr Mohammad Hanif Khan yesterday [Aug 1] nailed rumours being spread by “anti-national elements” that the Government intended further nationalisation or demonetisation of currency notes of any denominations. Addressing a Press conference … he announced “most solemnly and with the fullest responsibility that the Government had no such intention”.
