KARACHI: Two suspected robbers were gunned down and a policeman was martyred during an encounter in Orangi Town in the small hours of Tuesday morning, officials said.

West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said that four policemen of District West Police were on routine motorcycle patrolling.

He said they spotted some suspects when they reached near Liaquat Chowk within the remit of the Pakistan Bazaar police station. However, upon seeing the law enforcers, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire and tried to fled.

The SSP said that the bullets hit Constable Hassan Ali, 26. The police retaliated and killed two suspects during an exchange of gunfire.

The wounded policeman was taken to a hospital, where he died during treatment. He sustained two bullet wounds.

Two pistols with bullets and a motorcycle were recovered from the possession of deceased suspects.

The police said they were identified as Asif, alias Bhaya and Mohammed Rashid, alias Pathan.

Suspect Asif was booked and arrested for his involvement in the murder of an assistant sub-inspector in 2021, the police said, adding that he was booked in total 13 cases, while his accomplice was nominated in one case.

Funeral prayers for martyred cop

A police spokesperson said the slain constable was wearing a bulletproof vest, but both bullets hit him from unprotected sides.

He was unmarried and originally hailed from Sukkur.

The funeral prayers were held at Police Headquarters, Garden.

Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho and other senior police officials attended the funeral.

Later, the body was sent to his hometown for burial.
