RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain, windstorms and thundershowers, with isolated heavy falls, across the southern and central parts of the country from Saturday (today) to Monday under the influence of a low-pressure area (LPA) over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas.
According to the Met office, the low-pressure area is causing monsoon currents to penetrate southern and central Pakistan, bringing widespread rainfall to Sindh, Punjab, federal capital, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) also issued an alert warning of heavy downpours, possible urban flooding in major cities, flash floods in rivers and hill torrents, and rising water levels in rivers and seasonal streams in Punjab.
The PDMA director general said deputy commissioners and all emergency response departments had been placed on alert. He directed the health, irrigation, communication and works, local government, and livestock departments to complete preparations for any emergency, warning that heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding in major cities and flash floods in rivers and seasonal drains.
The warning came as Punjab continued to recover from record monsoon rains over the past four days that inundated cities, claimed lives and pushed several rivers and drains above normal levels. It stated that windstorms and lightning may damage weak structures, including solar panels, electric poles and billboards, during the forecast period.
