KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Thursday remanded four persons, including officials of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) custody in a case pertaining to their alleged involvement in making false identity documents for Afghan nationals.

The investigating officer of the case produced the four suspects — Assistant Director Imamul Haq, Deputy Assistant Director Fayyaz Ahmed, watchman Junaid Ahmed and a private agent, Muhammad Umar Shah — before Judicial Magistrate (East) Gulraiz Memon and sought their custody for interrogation.

The IO informed the court that they were arrested on July 22 over their alleged involvement in “preparation, processing, approval and insurance of computerised national identity cards (CNICs) to non-nationals on the basis of forged and bogus documents, compromising the integrity of national registration system for their illegal pecuniary benefits”.

He requested the court to hand over their custody to the agency to recover additional incriminating material, collect further documentary and oral evidence and to apprehend their accomplices.

After hearing all sides, the judge remanded the suspects in FIA custody for two days.

The FIA claimed preliminary investigations showed that the suspects were allegedly involved in facilitating the issuance of fake identity documents for Afghan citizens, altering records and other illegal activities.

In the FIR, the agency claimed that during the enquiry from Nadra officials, they allegedly admitted that they, in collusion with Umar Shah, involved in processing, approving, and issuance of CNICs to “non-nationals by using fake and forged documents”.

They disclosed that more than 100 such identity cards had been processed through illegal modus operandi, it added.
