KARACHI: A pickup truck ran over and killed a homeless man and injured his four-year-old son, who were sleeping on a footpath, in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in the small hours of Wednesday, police and rescue services officials said.
A traffic police official said the driver of the pickup truck was coming towards Khayaban-i-Ittehad from Khayaban-i-Shujaat and when he reached a traffic signal, he suddenly turned left, but the vehicle went out of his control, mounted the footpath and ran over the man and his son, who were asleep there.
Area people and some passers-by stopped the driver and took the injured duo to a private hospital in his pickup truck. However, doctors pronounced the Khadim Husain, 40, dead on arrival and admitted Zeeshan, 4, for treatment.
Darakhshan SHO Rashid Ali said the pickup driver managed to escape from the hospital. He said police were attempting to trace and arrest the suspect with the help of CCTV footage.
The corpse was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.
The police said the deceased, along with his minor son, sold flowers at traffic signals in DHA.
