Sindh plans body to counter ‘negative propaganda’ on social media

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to set up a cell to counter “negative and misleading propaganda” on social media.

According to a statement issued here on Wednesday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that a provincial-level cell should be established to prevent the spread of false and misleading information on social media and ensure accountability for those responsible.

Chairing a meeting of the Information Department, Memon said that certain elements were attempting to spread false and misleading information against the country and its national interests through social media platforms. “Effective legal action against those involved in spreading false and misleading information is essential.”

Participants of the meeting discussed strategies to counter propaganda on social media, as well as campaigns targeting national interests.

Memon said that the Sindh government wanted a dedicated provincial-level cell to be established to prevent cybercrime.

He said that false and misleading propaganda cannot be permitted under the guise of freedom of expression.

The minister, who holds the portfolios of information, transport and mass transit, said that the Sindh government would take every possible step to safeguard national interests and promote the dissemination of accurate information.

The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General-Information Moiz Pirzada, Director Muhammad Yousuf Kaburo and others.
