KARACHI, July 16: Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman has directed the education secretary to take steps for maintaining standards in education sector and bound the unregistered universities to comply with regulations in carrying out their activities.

This should be done to ensure promotion of education through fulfilment of required regulations, he said while addressing a meeting at his office on Saturday.

Fazlur Rehman pointed out that keeping a check on illegal educational institutions was the responsibility of provincial administration, particularly the education department.

Referring to a report compiled by Dr M.S. Qureshi, the chief secretary said that about 24 private universities were operating in Sindh which should be bound to get permission for imparting education under the applicable rules and regulations.

The meeting agreed on initiating an action to regulate these illegal institutions under the rules while considering that education of students should not suffer.

The meeting decided that provincial education department along with law and home department would adopt a well-coordinated strategy to bring these illegal universities under the legal net.

The education department in this regard has started process for sending notices to these universities.

The chief secretary sought the progress report in this regard within a week.
