KARACHI: At least three personnel of Pakistan Rangers were martyred on Saturday evening after a heavily armed group attacked a local headquarters of the paramilitary force in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, officials said.
In a swift response to the late evening gun-and-bomb attack, at least three terrorists were killed.
Initial reports indicate that the attackers used a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VB-IED) to ram into the main gate of the Rangers Headquarters in Gulistan-i-Jauhar’s Block 5, triggering a powerful explosion. In the immediate aftermath of the blast, the militants stormed the compound and opened indiscriminate fire.
Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho confirmed to Dawn that a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued after the vehicle breached the gate.
“Three terrorists were eliminated,” during the operation, he said. He also confirmed three Rangers personnel embraced martyrdom during the encounter.
The police chief said the area had been cordoned off by a heavy contingent of police and Rangers commandos. He said a “mopping-up operation” was currently underway.
The powerful blast and subsequent heavy gunfire forced residents and bystanders to scramble for safety. Law enforcement and emergency rescue services rushed to the scene, while multiple arterial roads leading from Mosamiyat to the local headquarters of Rangers were closed to vehicular traffic as security operation continued late into the night.
Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed to Dawn that an injured Rangers official had been brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) with gunshot wounds to his knee.
Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media indicate that the Jamaatul Ahrar faction of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the assault, saying that nine of its militants participated in the operation.
