Former Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US, saying that since the agreement, “every Iranian in every corner of the world takes pride in their Iranian identity,” Al Jazeera reports.

In a statement posted on X, Rouhani says Iran’s leaders had “with firmness, wisdom, and prudence, managed the unity of the nation”, while the armed forces had “left the enemy with the bitter regret of military defeat in their hearts”.

He calls for vigilance going forward, warning that “the achievements of the initial agreement must be safeguarded” and Iranians must remain alert “against the enemy’s plots and breaches of promise”.

Rouhani adds that Iran’s neighbours “can benefit from the fruits of regional security and shared development by participating in and guaranteeing this agreement”.

Rouhani, who served as president from 2013 to 2021 and oversaw the original 2015 nuclear deal with the US, is seen as a moderate voice within the Iranian political establishment.
