THATTA: Thousands of political workers, social activists, women and youth from across Sindh and other parts of the country gathered in Mungar Khan Palijo village near Jungshahi on Sunday to mark the eighth death anniversary of veteran nationalist leader, lawyer, writer and politician Rasool Bux Palijo.

The event, organised by the Awami Tehreek (AT) at Palijo’s ancestral village, Mungar Khan Palijo, featured speeches, cultural performances, resolutions, and tributes highlighting his political and intellectual contributions.

Women activists of the Sindhyani Tehreek held a ceremonial parade to pay homage to the late Palijo. Different cultural groups presented folk songs and tableaux celebrating his legacy. Renowned artist Sheema Kermani also paid homage by presenting a cultural performance.

Addressing the gathering, Awami Tehreek President Wasand Thari described the late Palijo as a revolutionary thinker, who championed the rights of workers, women and oppressed nationalists. He said Palijo had laid the ideological foundations for progressive politics in Sindh and remained committed to safeguarding democratic rights and provincial autonomy throughout his life.

The gathering adopted a series of resolutions calling for the protection of provincial rights, measures to curb inflation, stronger safeguards for women, protection of the Indus Delta and greater democratic freedoms.

Other speakers expressed their serious concern over the rising inflation, restrictions on the freedom of expression, violence against women and “attempts to undermine provincial autonomy through proposed constitutional amendments”.

Among those who addressed the gathering were AT General Secretary Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Sindhyani Tehreek President Umra Samoon, Siraj Seel and Bakhshal Thalho, besides political, social and literary figures.
