QUETTA: A seven-month-old baby girl was burnt to death while two others suffered injuries after fire broke out in a slum settlement along the Assembly Road in the Arbab Town area of Quetta on Tuesday.

Local people said the fire broke out suddenly in the huts of the settlement and it engulfed several homes within minutes. The deceased was identified as Kareema, daughter of Jan Mohammad Solangi, a resident of Goth Hameed, Chattar tehsil of Nasirabad district.

The injured included eight-month-old Murtaza, son of Maliyar Lashari, a resident of Ward No 2, Dera Murad Jamali; and 35-year-old Rahima, daughter of Horan Jamot, also a resident of Goth Hameed in Chattar tehsil. The condition of the two injured people was reported to be stable.

The blaze also destroyed several huts and reduced household belongings to ashes, leaving several families homeless.

Area people said that despite having informed the fire brigade officials immediately after the blaze broke out, their staff failed to reach the area in time which resulted in greater losses.

Local people said they managed to partially control the fire on their own and shifted affected families to safe places before emergency responders arrived.

Witnessed said that all belongings inside the huts were gutted.
