KARACHI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested the main suspect allegedly involved in the killing of a newly married couple in the Malir area on Monday.

The couple — 20-year-old Nadia Aslam and 25-year-old Najeeullah Aziz — were shot dead when assailants opened fire on their car near the RCD ground in Saudabad. They were returning from the Malir courts, where the woman recorded her statement, maintaining that she married of her own free will.

A police spokesperson said in a statement that the law enforcers carried out an operation in Ayub Goth, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, using technical methods, examining CCTV footage and intelligence and arrested suspect Sajid Aslam, who is brother of deceased Nadia.

During interrogation, the suspect revealed that he had arranged Nadia’s engagement to another man, identified as Saeed Gopang, and had received Rs350,000 in return.

Korangi SSP Fida Husain Janwari told Dawn that the held suspect fired shots at the couple.

“Raids are underway to arrest other suspects involved in the case, while further investigation is underway,” the spokesperson said.
