HYDERABAD: Although water supply has somewhat improved, the crisis still persists in various areas of the City, Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas on Tuesday.
Electricity load management plan has been relaxed by the federal power utility — Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco)— following a number of government and parliamentary level interventions. As a result, Hesco lifted its load management plan from Monday night till the third day of the Eidul Azha to facilitate an uninterrupted power supply.
“Residents in our area have received water supply only this morning between 7am to 9am today,” said a resident of Noorani Basti and a religious party office bearer, Hafiz Arman Chohan. “We are mostly dependent on groundwater because water supply from Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation (HW&SC) hardly meets the requirement of drinking water supply,” he added. He said that since last fortnight water supply had almost been unavailable.
Similarly, areas of Phulelli and Rehman Town remained affected as well.
According to Anwar Qureshi, water supply only improved on Tuesday. ‘Otherwise contaminated water was available in the lines and that only after pumping. The water with bad dour is indicative of the fact that supply lines are dry and machines are sucking contaminated water,” he said.
Water shortage was also reported in Liaquat Colony’s Ashrafabad, Unit Nos. 8, 11 and Qasimabad’s Prince Town and Bhitai town, Qasimabad Phase-I, Doomrah Goth, Naseem Deluxe areas. Residents from Liaquat Colony remained worst affected. “Water supply is ensured for an hour or so and that is insufficient to meet domestic requirements,” said Aqib Shaikh, a resident of Ashrafabad, a Liaquat Colony neighbourhood.
A resident from revenue society Qasimabad phase-I, Zahid Kolachi said that water supply had been badly disrupted in the last 10-12 days. “We are not getting regular supply of water”, said Kolachi, a real estate dealer.
According to Deputy Commissioner Zain Ul Abiden Memon, Paretabad feeder of Hesco had developed a fault. But the water supply situation had improved on Monday-Tuesday night.
HW&SC related sources said that that corporation’s internal water distribution network was also hit by different nature of faults in machinery which was also affecting supplies. When a pumping machine of heavy capacity develops a fault it takes time for repair and this causes a suspension of water supply.
Hesco chief in his meeting with MQM’s parliamentarians on Tuesday had told them that HW&SC should also focus on their own internal issues that were causing belated water supplies. He mentioned that while Hesco would ensure uninterrupted power supply but that was to be backed by an efficient water distribution system of HW&SC otherwise lifting of load-management plan would be an exercise in futility.
