SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A young passer-by was killed and another sustained injuries when rival groups exchanged fire at a cattle market in the New Raghzai area of Servekai tehsil here on Tuesday, the police said.

According to the police, two groups traded fire at the crowded cattle market, where people had gathered to purchase sacrificial animals.

The indiscriminate fire caused panic among traders and visitors, forcing them to run for safety.

The firing left the young man dead and his nephew injured. The deceased was identified as Mustafa Noor, a resident of the Ospas village.

District police officer Arshad Khan told Dawn that Noor had arrived at the cattle market, along with his nephew, to buy sacrificial animals when they were caught in the crossfire.

Mr Khan said the armed men continued firing for several minutes before fleeing the scene. The body was later shifted to his native village.
