HYDERABAD: While the Hyderabad Water & Sewerage Corporation (HW&SC) failed to overcome the persisting water crisis in Hyderabad ahead of Eidul Azha, the provincial and federal government functionaries on Monday practically intervened to provide relief to people, at least during the Eid days.

Sindh Planning and Development Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro, as well as National Assembly’s Standing Committee members Wasim Hussain and Naveed Qamar, reached out to the management of the federal entity, Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), pressing it to fix the issues concerning the HW&SC.

Water supply to various areas in the City, Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas was badly affected over the last several days.

Mayor Kashif Shoro said that it was mainly the electricity issue that was affecting regular and uninterrupted water supply from HW&SC facilities. However, Hesco disputed this claim, and said that some important water facilities of HW&SC were connected with a dual source of power supply. He said that all 162 feeders would be exempted from loadshedding from Monday night.

Hesco made to relax loadshedding at pumping stations during Eid days

In the wake of ongoing crisis, Jam Khan Shoro had a conference meeting with Mayor Kashif Shoro, Hesco chief Faizullah Dahri and Sindh Energy Secretary Shahab Qamar Ansari to ensure that some load-management schedule should be lifted so that power supply to key water facilities could be ensured till the third day of the Eid.

Secretary Ansari confirmed that Hesco chief has been advised by the P&D minister to ensure that load-management schedule should be withdrawn during Eid holidays in order to help HW&SC run its water facilities. He said that the Sindh government would pay the demand notice after the Eid for ensuring ‘express feeders’ wherever necessary.

Faizullah Dahri told Dawn that lifting of load-management schedule in Hyderabad has been brought forward and now it has been withdrawn. “There will be no loadshedding from tonight till the third day of Eidul Azha,” he said.

He said MNA Wasim Hussain also led a delegation of his party’s parliamentarians for a meeting with him this evening to see how to resolve the present crisis. He claimed that MNA Naveed Qamar’s representative Mir Ali Raza Talpur, a former member of Hesco’s Board of Governors (BoD), also met him in this connection and MNA Qamar also conveyed his concern over unavailability of water in the city.

Hyderabad DC Zain Ul Abiden Memon and HW&SC chief executive officer (CEO) Tufail Abro called on Hesco chief to seek the exemption through six express feeders. The DC separately chaired a meeting with HW&SC officials to understand nature of the problem and felt that a lack of coordination between HW&SC and Hesco staff was one of the main problems that has so far contributed to the crisis.

DC Zain told Dawn that the feeders declared ‘express’ included New Shahbaz, Bhitai, Agha Khan, HDA, Miani Forest and Paretabad which feed electricity to water facilities. In case of any fault or internal problem, the matter would be resolved through close coordination involving HW&SC and Hesco, he said.
