KARACHI: The administration of the University of Karachi (KU) has rejected the “allegations” levelled against it by the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (Kuts).
A statement issued by the varsity said that the allegations of corruption and nepotism, levelled against the KU by the teachers’ body during a recent press conference, are “contrary to facts.”
It said that the KU believes in running financial matters according to governmental laws and regulations, and all decisions are made with the approval of relevant legal and constitutional forums.
The administration said that the budget is a technical matter which only experts in the relevant field can properly understand. A deficit budget does not mean corruption; rather, it is prepared on the basis of available resources and expected expenditures, it added.
Rising inflation is impacting not only employees and ordinary citizens but also educational institutions.
The University’s electricity expenses have tripled, while other utility bills and medical costs have also risen significantly, with medical expenses recorded to have increased by up to 100 per cent, the statement added.
It further stated that since 201718, the Federal Higher Education Commission has provided only Rs1.8 billion for salaries, while during this period, salaries and pensions have increased overall by 170pc.
Furthermore, it said that the increase in house ceiling allowance announced by the federal government is of an “extraordinary nature”. However, until the Sindh government adopts this policy, provincial employees cannot be granted this increase.
According to the administration, this increase would require approximately Rs510million annually, which the varsity cannot bear with its limited resources. In this regard, all details have been sent to the Sindh government along with a request for a special grant or bailout package.
