SWABI: Several areas of the Swabi district were still without power on Monday, despite the passage of 24 hours after a windstorm uprooted pylons of high transmission lines in the region on Sunday.

Officials of Peshawar Electric Supply Company said that electricity supply had been restored to various regions after several hours of effort, but many regions were still without power.

Rawaiz Khan, a resident of Chota Lahor, said that all the villages connected to the Chota Lahor grid station were told that the main tower of the station had fallen, cutting off supply, which may take a day or two to repair.

Boundary walls of numerous houses also collapsed, and billboards were uprooted, while solar panels fell down. Rescue officials responded to various emergency calls and took several injured persons to Bacha Khan Teaching Hospital. Farmers said the windstorm and heavy rain inflicted huge financial losses on them.

Iqbal Khan Shewa, a member of the Tobacco Growers Association of Pakistan, said that the tobacco crop was damaged at a very ripe stage. He said the growers in some places had sustained about 50 per cent loss in their crop.

Wheat farmers said the untimely rain disrupted the threshing process, threatening to ruin their yield.
