LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reaffirmed her government’s commitment to a free, responsible media, calling press freedom the cornerstone of a democratic society.

In her message themed “Shaping a Peaceful Future” on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, the CM paid tribute to journalists worldwide, stating that a free, autonomous, and responsible press strengthens democracy. She highlighted the sacrifices of media workers and said the government is working to provide housing facilities to journalists, while ensuring their safety and professional dignity.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari also lauded journalists, terming them “true heroes” who work under difficult conditions. She warned that fake news issue remains the biggest threat to press freedom and announced welfare measures, including housing for 3,200 journalists and increased financial grants.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Awami Tehreek Information secretary Nurullah Siddiqui urged greater efforts to address growing challenges to press freedom in Pakistan.
