Accountability

THIS is with reference to the report ‘First batch of Gul Plaza traders receives compensation in Karachi’ (April 25), according to which the Sindh chief minister handed over compensatory cheques to 200 of the 1,209 fire-hit Gul Plaza shop-

keepers. The amount distributed was Rs511.7 million out of total relief package worth Rs7 billion. This distribution of compensation among the affected families and traders may provide some relief to those who suffered heavy losses, but this can in now way bring back the lives lost. No amount of money can really compensate for the loss of lives. It is only the loss of livelihood that can be compensated.

Many of the affected families are still going through emotional and financial hardship, and some cases are yet to be resolved due to verification and legal issues. Timely and transparent distribution of remaining funds is essential in order to ensure public trust.

At the same time, the focus must shift towards accountability and prevention. The formation of a committee to review the judicial commission’s report is a positive move, but strict action must be taken against those who were actually responsible for the tragedy.

Stronger safety regulations, regular inspections and improved emergency response systems are seriously necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future.
