KARACHI: A judicial magistrate has granted bail to two suspects in a case pertaining to their alleged involvement in illegal “gambling activities” through an app.
The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) apprehended two suspects — Imran Ali and Ajeet Kumar — during a raid at an office in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VI.
The duo was booked under Sections 13 (electronic forgery) and 14 (electronic fraud) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), read with Sections 34 (common intention) and 109 (abetment) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the FIR, an inquiry was initiated against the suspects for their alleged involvement in illegal online gambling activities through an app. The report added that a raid was conducted at their office located in Bukhari Commercial, DHA Phase VI.
The NCCIA claimed that when questioned about the electronic fraud involving online gambling activities, the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
It added that the agency had seized their mobile phones and analysed their digital devices, which revealed “incriminating material pertaining to their alleged involvement in electronic fraud and illegal online gambling and betting activities.”
The agency further alleged that the suspects were operating both admin and bettor or punter accounts on the application “Bet Pro” and website www.bpexch.net, adding that the suspects were found to be “facilitating and enabling betting and casino activities for the wider public through WhatsApp.”
It added that many bank accounts were found in “facilitation of the transfer of bet and win money.”
The NCCIA claimed that during initial grilling, they named Suhail and Fazlullah as their alleged partners in the illicit business.
The duo had filed an application before the judicial magistrate (East) and sought post-arrest bail in the case.
After hearing the prosecution and defence counsel, the court granted them bail against a surety bond of Rs50,000 each.
