GENEVA: Japan will host the women’s basketball World Cup in 2030 and France will host the men’s tournament in 2031, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) said on Wednesday.

The women’s competition will be held in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8, 2030, while the men’s World Cup will be contested across Lille, Lyon and Paris from August 29 to September 14, 2031, FIBA said in a statement.

Japan and France both hosted the recent summer Olympic Games, with Tokyo staging the 2020 Games delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and Paris hosting the Olympics in 2024. Japan’s women and France’s men won silver medals on home soil at those games.

“Japan and France are two basketball-loving nations, two destinations extremely popular with our fans, players and partners,” FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis said.

Japan previously hosted the men’s basketball World Cup in 2006 but this is the first time the country will host the women’s World Cup. France will host a basketball World Cup event for the first time.

Germany is hosting the women’s World Cup this year from September 4-13 and Qatar will host the men’s World Cup in 2027.
